Job Summary: The School Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role involves performing routine cleaning and maintenance tasks, ensuring that school facilities are well-kept, and supporting the overall functionality of the school environment.
Key Responsibilities:

Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors in classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and common areas.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, ensuring adequate supplies of soap and paper products.
- Dust and wipe down surfaces, including furniture, windowsills, and fixtures.
- Empty trash receptacles and dispose of waste appropriately.

Facility Support:
- Set up and break down spaces for school events, meetings, and activities.
- Assist in minor maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs and performing basic repairs.
- Monitor and report any safety hazards or maintenance issues to the administration.

Safety and Compliance:
- Follow health and safety regulations, including proper handling of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with school policies and procedures regarding cleanliness and maintenance.

Team Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with school staff to support the needs of the facility and enhance the learning environment.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers regarding cleaning schedules and priorities.

Additional Duties:
- Perform seasonal tasks such as snow removal, yard work, and upkeep of outdoor areas.
- Participate in training sessions and staff meetings as required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in custodial or janitorial work is a plus.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and techniques.
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects and perform physical tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well with others.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a school environment, which may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals and working with various equipment.
Salary: $17.50 per hour plus benefits such as health insurance, life insurance, and the South Dakota Retirement System. |
